Te Papa remembrance installation of 600 crossses

On Blue Friday at 1230 outside Te Papa supporters gathered to remember the 600 men who die every year of prostate cancer. 600 blue crosses were laid out in a cross shape outside the main entrance of Te Papa - the sight was quite sobering as it was acknowledged that each cross represented a man who died of prostate cancer this last year. At least 200 of those crosses were unnecessary deaths that may have been prevented by early detection.

Geoff Burton of MWC Media introduced the event, followed by a brief speech by Mana Prostate Cancer Foundation representatives Doreen and Ian Morrison. Reverend Bill Herbert then opened with a Karakia before those present were invited to take up one of the blue crosses. Some wrote the name of a loved one lost to prostate cancer on their cross.  2 minutes of silence was then observed.
